Practice and procedure update: Legal practitioner access to finalised files for family law proceedings
On 10 May 2025, the Courts will automatically end legal practitioners’ access to family law files on the Commonwealth Courts Portal (CCP) 60 days after all applications on the file are finalised. For those files already finalised as at 10 May 2025, access will cease on 11 July 2025. This change is being implemented as part of the Courts’ continuous efforts to strengthen and ensure security and functionality of our systems.
Update to the profession: Filing and listing of family law proceedings in circuit locations commencing 2023
From January 2023, parties wishing to commence family law proceedings in circuit locations will be able to choose their first return dates before a Judicial Registrar directly on the Commonwealth Courts Portal. A significant amount of work has been undertaken to ensure that parties living in rural and regional areas serviced by Circuit lists are able to have the same access to the Courts and benefit of the case management pathway as those living in larger cities.

Today, the Courts officially launched three animated short films that will help educate the public about: What is family violence in family law cases?, How is the voice of the child heard? and How does the court process work for parenting cases? The Courts’ new films build on the existing online resources developed by the Courts in 2021 which focused on how to ‘separate smarter’.
